After Dunkirk May 1940 most of the British Army kit was lost so they started to re-equip and it was found that the Original 1937 shovel that was based on the German model was inadequate for the job.

So the British Army  re issued from stores the 1908 entrenching tool with a new pouch that would carry the wood handle on the pouch instead of next to the Bayonet like on the1908. This set was issued through out WW2 from 1939 to 1945 until 1945 when a new handle with a bayonet adaptor for mine probing was issued
