This MK2 set was issued in WW2 from 1945 onwards to replace the original MK1 with this improved model

After Dunkirk May 1940 most of the British Army kit was lost so they started to re-equip and it was found that the Original 1937 shovel that was based on the German model was inadequate for the job.
The British Army re issued from stores the 1908 entrenching tool with a new pouch that would carry the wood handle on the pouch instead of next to the Bayonet like on the1908.
