This 1937 small pack would have been similar to what a soldier would have worn in combat on his back connect to his webbing set which contained his rations and spare clothes.
It can also be slung over the shoulder using a shoulder strap (available extra) as a haversack.

By the middle of the WW2 soldiers were fighting around the world, the deserts of North Africa, the hot jungle climate of Burma and the med but all would have been issued this same webbing set. If needed their khaki webbing was blancoed to the correct colour. Not all troops blancoed there webbing and many units in Europe and UK can be seen wearing natural coloured blancoed
