This is the full size air cav shoulder patch of the US first air cavalry division.
One of the most famous American military units, partly due to films like "Apocalypse Now" and "We were soldiers", where the helicopter scenes are very memorable, but mainly the 1st Air Cav. is famous for its battles in the fields and mountains of Vietnam.
This is the subdued version which was introduced during the Vietnam war and was to be worn on the combat uniforms like the 3rd pattern tropical combat jacket. .
The subdued Air Cav patch was also worn on the US woodland camouflage BDU uniform.
