The "Confederate battle flag" is often wrongly called the Stars and Bars or the Confederate flag.

The first Southern States flag was introduced in March 1861 and was based on the original US flag it had three bars on it (two red and one white) and in the corner a blue square with a circle of white stars, this flag was the official Confederate flag which was nicknamed the stars and bars flag.

The problem with the official Confederate flag was that on the battle field it looked too similar to the northern states flag which ended up with confusion so the commanders of the Confederate army in Virginia (then known at the Army of the Potomac) sought a distinctive emblem as an alternative to the Confederacy’s first national flag to serve as a battle flag.

Thus was born the "Confederate Battle Flag" designed to easily identify the Southern Armies on the battlefield, although numerous commanders had there own battle flags designed and made also.

Eventually the Battle Flag became more popular to South than the Stars and Bars.
