American Civil War Leather Carbine Cartridge Box

£31.99 £26.66

Carbine cartridge box used by troop issued the carbine like the cavalry and mounted troops in the American Civil war.

The Cavalry units in the American Civil War where issued a special cartridge box pouch, which was smaller in height than the standard infantry version. It also had two leather belt loops on the back and was worn on the leather belt along with other pouches that would carry the essentials for warfare.

The American Cavalry was issued carbines which are shorter than the rifles used by the Infantry the Federal Union cavalry issued at least 17 different carbines during the war. The first ones at the beginning of the war where breech loaded carbines that fired a paper cartridge like the Sharps Carbine. The US Union Army purchased nearly 80,000 Sharps carbines and they where used throughout the war. Unlike the standard rifle and muskets that the Army used at the outbreak of war the breech loading carbines could be reloaded in the saddle by simply dropping the trigger guard which open the breech push in a paper cartridge, pull up the trigger guard and fire, which made them essential for the Cavalry.

The standard pouch that the cavalry used to carry the cartridges in was this Cavalry cartridge pouch which was used by both Union and Confederate Cavalry in the American Civil War.

The Cavalry Carbine Cartridge pouch features:

  • Smooth black leather.
  • Sewn with white thread and brass rivets.
  • Two leather belt on the back which are stitched and riveted on.
  • Main compartment.
  • Pouch on the front of the main compartment has a flap closure for tools.
  • Main compartment has a separate flap and then there is a second main flap which secures the two flaps down this was done to try to help keep the cartridges dry.
  • Main flap has a stitched on strap which fastens onto the brass spiked stud on the bottom of the carbine pouch to close the whole pouch.
  • Front flap is shaped.
  • Paper cartridges where usually placed in a wooden block which had holes in it to take the cartridges. The wooden blocks would fit inside the main compartment, the wooden block is not included in this pouch.

Price is for one replica black leather carbine cartridge pouch which was used by both North and South cavalry units during the American Civil War.

The pouch is ideal for a 1859 Sharps carbine cartridge pouch, it can also be used for the likes of the Starr carbine and the Merrill Carbine.
