This replica kepi is for a Northern Officer with the rank of Captain. The rank is shown by the gold braid sewn on to the cap, this has two rows of braid which is for a Captain, a single row was for a Lieutenant. To identify the branch of service a small wire bullion badge was usually sewn to the front above the chinstrap, crossed sabres was for Cavalry, crossed cannon barrels for Artillery and a French hunting horn for the Infantry. The hunting horn was taken from the French Infantry badge which was the same hunting horn design badge. Branch of service badges are available separately.
The US Union Captain Officers blue kepi has the following features:
- Dark blue wool upper.
- Two rows of gold Officers braid around the crown and 4 vertical stripes at the front, back and sides plus the swirls on the top of the cap.
- The two rows of Officer braid identify the wearing as a Captain in the Northern Federal Army.
- Suitable for all branch of services, just add the badge.
- Chinstrap with brass buckle.
- Brass buttons with the Union eagle design on them are on each side which fasten the chinstrap to cap.
- Peak on the front.
- Cotton lined.
