This is the metal Major officer rank issued by the SVN (South Vietnamese) and worn by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the US military advisors assigned to work along side ARVN troops.
The SVN name for a Major is Thieu ta.
In 1964 the ARVN rank for the Major was changed by adding the rectangle bar onto the badge to make it easier to identify the rank.
The US troops wore both the normal US rank and the ARVN equivalent so that everyone would know the rank of the officer.
