WW2 ATS Lance corporal attached to Royal Artillery
The ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) was formed on the 9th September 1938 as a branch of the British Army and initially were recruited as Cooks ,Clerks and store keepers but as the war progressed this was expanded to Signalers, Anti-Aircraft gunners, search light operators, mechanics, drivers, dispatch Riders plus many more. The rank names were different initially but after 1941 they were the same Army, All ATS ladies from the Rank of Private to Colonel wore the same basic uniform except badges. When ATS personnel were attached to a regiment they wore above there left pocket the badge of that regiment.
This Service dress uniform was worn for most duties until 1941 when battledress was introduced for work as anti-aircraft gunners and truck drivers.
This uniform represents an ATS Lance corporal who has been attached to a Royal Artillery Anti-aircraft unit in the south of England, she would have worked as a plotter in the command post for the search lights and Anti-aircraft guns protecting the cities and factories being bombed by the Luftwaffe
