The coastal Surveillance force used small patrol and swift boats to patrol the Vietnam coast and rivers. They also supported Special Forces operations and attacked VC positions. The boats where heavily armed with 50 cal machine guns and even mortars.
The oval metal badge was officially recognized and issued to all officers and men assigned to the squadron. It was worn over the right pocket on the uniform shirt.
