The Flight officer rank was introduced in November 1942 by the US air force, and was the rank given for glider pilots when they were fully qualified.
The rank was given to enlisted and aviation cadets who completed training as a pilot, flight engineer, navigator, bombardier as well as a glider pilot.

The rank of flight officer was discontinued at the end of the war in 1945 as all remaining flight officers had either left the air force or had been promoted to a commissioned officer (a lieutenant or higher).
