When the US Airborne was first started they had a separate cap badge for the Infantry and Artillery units, this is the Parachute Infantry cap badge and was worn on the enlisted mans and Officers garrison cap by all the Parachute Infantry Regiments (P.I.R.) like the 501st, 505th, 506th and 508th P.I.R.'s from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.,

This cap badge was worn before the Normandy landings while all the Parachute troops where training in America and England it was replaced sometime after the Invasion of France by the combined glider and parachute cap badge.

The cap badge has a white parachute on a blue background and is worn on the right hand side of the Officers Garrison cap and the left hand side on the Infantry (blue piping) Garrison cap for the Enlisted Men (any rank less than a Lieutenant).
