To use the ranger counter beads you first need to count how many paces, or strides, you take to cover a given distance. 100 metres is a good distance to begin with as if is simple to divide into.
Now you know how many paces you take to cover 100 metres each time you reach that number pull a bead from the nine bead group down. Each one of these beads now equals 100 metres.
Once you have walked nine beads, so 900 metres, at the next 100 metres you pull one bead down from the 4 bead group. You now know you have walked 1km, start again with the nine 100 metre beads and you can easily measure your distance upto 4km.
If you stop at a distance between 0 & 100 metres you should be able to quickly estimate the distance based on your paces e.g. you've walked 1/4 of your 100 metre paces so you have traveled 25 metres.
