The RAF Suits blue grey aircrews (Battledress) were issued as it was found that the Service dress was not efficient for Aircrew and a design similar to 1937 battle dress was trialed in 1939 and issued from December 1940 to Flying Crew.
It was not until October 1943 that it became widespread issue to all including Officers, NCO's ground personnel and Aircrewmen. The Battledress trousers were different to the army battledress in that it did not have a map pocket but did have, from 1940 to 1943, a small flapped first aid pocket on the top left of the leg. After 1943 it was changed to the standard army pleated pocket.
