Royal Navy 1804 Boarding cutlass by Lantern Armouries .
The cutlass was the main blade of the seaman – short for close quarters combat, and a thick blade enough to hack a man or rigging alike, the cutlass was a simple but savage weapon. The large guard protected the sailors hand from all manner of blades in a wild sea-melee.

Just before the famous naval battle of Trafalar, a new pattern of the Boarding cutlass was issued. The popular 18th century design of the figure '8' iron hand guard was retained but the horn or leather hand grip was abandoned. The constant exposure to sea water, temperature and humidity fluctuations destroyed much of the old grip making the sword useless. In 1804 an iron grip was introduced, greatly extending the life of the cutlass.
