This badge set was worn on Battle Dress clothing during WW2 when British Generals were not wearing Service Dress usually when they were in the fighting area near the front line. British Generals wore Battle Bress from 1939 to the end of WW2 in 1945 and these could be sewn onto either 1937 model or the latter 1940 pattern.
