When the ATS were tasked with operating in Anti-Aircraft Batteries in 1941 it was found that the ATS Service Dress was not suitable for this job and so Men’s BD uniform was issued. The ATS were latter issued at the end of 1941 with their own special clothing including Brown Ankle boots, leather Gaiters, BD Slacks and BD jacket, these were over the period of the war modified and simplified for easier production.

This ATS Lance Corporal is attached to a Royal Artillery Anti-Aircraft battery that protected Cities, Factories and Air bases around the UK, This L/Cpl wears a late war khaki beret that were purchased privately instead of the GS cap that was hated by everybody and by 1945 the Khaki Beret was issued, on the cap is a Brass ATS cap badge with ATS backing. The red Anti-Aircraft command badges on each sleeve were worn by pride by Ack Ack gunners and instead of the ATS lanyard is a white Royal Artillery lanyard. Brown ankle boots and Leather gaiters proved useful in a wet and cold Anti-Aircraft position on some windswept bleak airfield.

The gas mask bag would always have been carried slung over the shoulder when not actually on duty (in the AA gun position it was worn on the back with a long hose gas mask as the normal infantry potion on the front chest was impossible when firing the gun) and sometimes it  made a good handbag as long as they were not found out otherwise they would have been on extra duties like spud bashing or painting stones white
