The US Garrison side cap was introduced in 1939 to replace the peaked service cap. The side cap was often called the Overseas cap as the peaked service cap was still worn at times state side, but apart from the Military Police it was only worn in Europe at very special occasions, the garrison side cap was almost the only headwear worn in Europe with the A Class dress uniform.
The O.D. (Olive Drab) wool garrison cap was worn with the A class dress uniform (4 pocket tunic or the short Ike jacket) and when you wearing the M9137 wool trousers and wool shirt, or with the likes of the M41 field jacket. It can be seen being worn around camp, while travelling and while training or simply down town at a dance or pub. It can be seen almost anywhere except the front line.
The US Army Garrison cap of WW2 had coloured braid running around the edge of the hat which denoted the wearer Branch Of Service.
