Mountain troops entrenching tool carrier by Kay Canvas.

This was a special cover made for the US mountain troops so that it could be carried on the mountain rucksack. The difference is that the belt hook on the back of the cover is fixed to the lower part of the cover (standard covers have the hook at the top of the cover). This allowed the entrenching tool to be carried higher on the rucksack so the handle did not hang so low, keeping it out of the way when sking or climbing.

This cotton canvas cover fits over the head of the M1910 E tool, the M1910 entrenching tool was first issued in WW1 and a version of it was still in general issue at the begining of WW2. The M1910 E tool has a one piece non folding wooden shaft with a T shaped handle.

The cover has a strap which wraps around the handle below the spade head and a metal belt hook on the back so it can be fixed onto the eyelets on the Mountain rucksack or the M1923 Garand belt.
