In the early years of WW2 the American army did not have a field boot for women, so they had to wear the men's boots which generally were too large in fit so were not as comfortably as they could have been.
In 1942 the US Army developed a boot specifically for women, the US Army women's field shoe was similar to the men's leather service boot and was designed to fit women's feet so they were slimmer. In 1943 they made a few improvements.
