In World War Two they were worn by the USAAF (United States Army Air Force) and the US Army. These are the same design that were used in WW2, Vietnam and are still issued to today's US Army.
In WW2 these were worn on the collar of shirts, the shoulder epaulets of the A class dress tunic and the side of the overseas Garrison caps.
