These Captain rank bars have the pin back fasteners (like a safety pin fastener) which are ideal for fixing onto the Officers A class tunic epaulettes.

The pin back fastening is ideal to wear on the shoulders of the A class dress tunic as the end of the epaulettes are usually sewn down making the fabric 2 or 3 layers so the standard clutch back fastening rank badges will not go through that many layers of fabric. The pin back fastening simply pins through like a safety pin. Clutch back fasteners are fine for caps, and shirt collars of shirt epaulettes where the fabric is not as thick.

The rank can also be worn on the Officers shirts and Garrison caps. In World War Two they were worn by the USAAF and the Army.

The pin back fastener on insignia are usually called early war issue but they were also used on private purchase insignia and British made insignia.
