This was officially called the Pouch, small arms, ammunition, universal. This was the standard mag pouch used in Vietnam and is part of the American M1956 webbing.
This pouch was designed to carry a 'universal' variety of ammunition, it could hold any of the following: 4 x 20rd M16 mags or 6 x M1 Garand clips or 2 x 20rd M14 mags or 2 x BAR mags or 4 x 30rd M1 carbine mags or 2 x hand grenades or 3 x 40mm M79 (M203) grenade launcher rounds.
Features; standard US metal belt keepers on the back to clip onto most webbing belts, full flap closure, straps on the side to secure hand grenades.
