Originally the Mess tin cover was designed to be worn on a belt using the 2 rear loops, but by WW1 it was often seen carried through the small pack straps using the handle. The mess tin cover kept the dirt out plus stopped the shine of the steel mess tins allowing the Germans to easily spot the Tommy.
