The Airborne sleeping bags are a bit of a mystery as to when and to whom they were issued, but it's believed they were used for paratroopers in airplanes that were not heated, possibly like the old Whitley bombers adapted for parachute use, to keep them warm while flying to the Drop zone. There are photographs showing British Airborne jeeps with them strapped to the bonnet as they were too big to actually carry.
