This German webbing set would have been worn though out WW2 and allowed the Paratrooper armed with the standard K98 Rifle to carry the essentials into combat without the extra burden of the assault pack or the entrenching tool.
The essentials being ammunition, water and food. If you wanted to add something extra the next item would probably be the gas mask tin.
